Bollywood actresses have evolved in the decades. In 2020, we finally have author-backed roles. But back in the day, an actress couldn’t make it past the production people if she didn’t know dancing. Whether that was a bad thing or not, we got some of the most eloquent female dancers because of this. With so many exquisite dancers around, it’s difficult to decide who is the Number 1 dancer in India. But this is our endeavor to make a list of all the female actors who were once the Number 1 Dancer in India.
Vyajayantimala comes from a long list of South Indian actresses who had professional training in classical dance. These individuals had a staple classical dance sequence in their movies. Vyajayantimala made it big in Bollywood with her dance and stellar acting performances in several movies in the fifties and the sixties. In Bollywood, she is credited with changing the kind of dance that was prominent at that time. Her most famous dance sequence remains the one from Jewel Thief.
Jaya Prada was the doyenne of classical and Bollywood dances. She, along with Sridevi brought a common-place grace to dance. Somehow, because of their characters, dance became the common ground for the working-class people. Dance was no longer something that needed ten supporting artists and supporting music. With Prada’s dances in movies like Tohfa, classical dancing came to India’s living rooms. Her most famous dance remains the one from the movie Tohfa.
Before Sudha Chandran became the vamp everyone loved to hate, she was one of the most prolific dance doyens from the South. Sudha Chandran is also one of the few living people who have had a movie made on them while they are alive – and that’s because of her dance history and a personal incident that tore her life apart. She is also one of the very few differently-abled dancers in India.
Malaika Arora Khan
Malaika Arora Khan brought spunk to dance that very few female actors have. She owned the stage with her dance performance in the song Chaiyya Chaiyya and has since then been a staple of dance reality shows all over India. Arora Khan is famous for her lively, chart-busting dance movies, including the ones in the raunchy song, Munni Badnaam Hui.
Like no list of male number 1 dancers is incomplete with Govinda, one cannot complete a list about famous Bollywood female dancers without Madhuri Dixit. Dixit hit the big leagues in the eighties, and has since then given some chart buster dances. Her most famous dance remains Ek Do Teen from Tezaab.
Dixit was the director’s favorite for almost two decades, and her dance on the tune of the late Saroj Khan was Bollywood gold.
These are the actresses who were once contenders to the throne of number one dancer in India. Did you like this list, make sure you follow us on www.bechuzi.com
